Social networks are an amazing phenomenon of our generation, and statistics are at least, surprising:
• Facebook has more than 1.5 billion active users on its platform.
• On Twitter, more than 350,000 tweets are sent per minute.
• In Youtube are assisted more than 6 billion hours of video per month.
• Instagram counts over 1 million likes per minute.
• LinkedIn has over 400,000 users on its network.
Millions of small entrepreneurs, bloggers or liberal professionals put all their efforts on social networks.
After all, they are entirely free, and through them, you can reach literally billionS of people on the internet.
However, I need to make a major warning:
"Put all your effort in social networks is the fastest way to failure."
That's what we will discuss in this article.
Guide to harness the full potential of social media networks in your business, website or blog.
Peter is a micro-entrepreneur and the owner of a local business, he sells healthy food for neighbors.
Believing in the power of social networks, he decided to create a Facebook page. After all, it's free, why not?
He called all his friends, talks about it for relatives and where he passes by leaving his message to follow his Facebook page.
But he soon realizes that failed to get the number of followers that he expected to gain.
So to speed up the page growth, he decided to spread it on Facebook, by creating ads for interested people to "Like" his Page.
After spending some money on that initial investment, Pedro now has a few thousand followers.
But an unexpected change in Facebook would raise doubts about all his progress ...
In 2012, the social network began to limit the organic reach to 16% of total fans from a page.
While in February 2014, an analysis showed that only 6% of users, on average, received the posts of the page. And since then, those numbers are falling...
The drops of organic reach of his publications brought Pedro to believe that the only possible option was to spend more money on ads to reach his current audience for whom Facebook did not show Peter´s updates.
But he soon realizes the path of no return that was coming to happen...
He invested money in attracting fans to his page, and now he was spending more money to reach the fans that he had already paid ?!
Peter soon realized that would not be possible to continue investing so much on Facebook, and so he decides to create a free account on Instagram to promote his business.
The perfect niche for Instagram?
After all, the health niche, exercise and nutrition are very powerful in this social network.
Despite posting all day consistently, search for hashtags and engage with other profiles and his fans, he noticed a change in Instagram that begins to affect his reach.
Rolling his timeline, he sees advertisements.
Immediately, Peter remembers the vicious cycle that he went on Facebook to promote his posts and his brand.
Then decides to test another social network.
Would Twitter be a solution?
Despite more than 271 million active users in 2016, the rumor that the social network will begin to use a similar algorithm to Facebook scares Peter, who decides to ignore this option.
What about Youtube?
Since people watch more than 6 billion hours of video per month, it is likely that even a small portion of this number can serve to Peter.
But after spending time and energy publishing a series of videos, Pedro realizes that the content producer on Youtube earns only $ 1 per 1,000 views. A CPM of $1.
So if he wants to have an income of $ 10,000 per month, it would need to generate 10 million views every month.
That´s because the algorithm favors Youtube views over the quality of content, once the social network does not send notifications to registered users in the channel if it does not launch videos every week.
Even for successful channels, with more than 10 million subscribers, revenues from ads on YouTube are not enough.
According to Ian SBF, YouTube is not a cost-effective model for them.
"For a channel like ours, which has 50 employees and a vast payroll, YouTube is a model that does not work anymore."
Would periscope be a way out?
Being connected live with his audience and increase his authority is an excellent proposal to create a strong brand.
But the profiles that he closely followed on Periscope were no longer generating content ...
Or at least that was what he thought ...
Searching further, was the Periscope application that stopped of adopting as a notification standard to users about live interactions.
And once again the reach of the content producer was falling one more time...
Lost in the sea of infinities of social networks, Peter could not see a clear future on how to build a solid online business.
After all, how to invest in something that he had no control?
How to deal with so many shifts from night to day?
How to reach your fans that are looking forward to getting new information without having to spend loads of money on ads?
Unfortunately, Peter is not a single case in this story.
Most people begin a digital business by the easy way, using the shorter and the wrong path.
They build all their assets in social networks, in a rented land.
And what is a rented land on the internet?
It is a land where you are not the owner.
A land where you don't create the rules, instead, you obey them.
A land where you are not free to do whatever you want.
"Why to build a blog?" They ask themselves...
"Everybody have a Facebook, right?"
Just create a free business page there and keep all my digital business around it ...
As you saw, the organic reach of most pages is between 2% -6%, a number that has been around 16% (or more) in the past.
Now, it is very tough if not almost impossible, to reach your audience, which yourself created on Facebook, by investing in advertising or organically.
And Facebook has a solution to solve this problem ...
Invest your money on ads to reach more people.
What were you expecting? It´s their land, not yours.
And maybe you´re a lucky guy for not being of the businesses that had their page deleted or the account banned by any violation of the Facebook rules.
And the same goes for the other social networks.
You must be very careful when investing your time and energy in them. Especially if some of them vanishes.
See if you remember any of them ...
Guide to harness the full potential of social media networks in your business, website or blog.
Remember them? Well ... the vast majority is now in the graveyard of failed social networks or abandoned on the internet.
This is one of the hidden costs that can put your business at risk, but there is another cost that is worth being mentioned: the cost of vanity.
Do you know the vanity metrics?
All of them are just numbers that say nothing about having a solid business.
These are metrics that make a "massage on our ego." That make us feel good. Facilitates a shallow conversation with others.
However, a fan, a follower or a view are not and should not be the goal of a business.
Unfortunately, many beginners on digital marketing put their focus on the wrong metrics, in vanity metrics.
Measure the number of followers, "Likes" or "Hearts" that you won is easy and even rewarding.
But the easy is not enough for those who want a business that generates tremendous value.
And this is another point where social networks delude beginners.
An account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or any other social network site is totally free.
But the time you spend on it or feeding your publications is not free After all:
"We can sell our time, but we can't buy it back" - Paulo Coelho
Also, the return on investment (ROI) tends to be bad if you look only at simple metrics like followers, likes, and views.
Okay. We already talked enough about a major hidden problem in social networks ...
But what would be the solution to get out of this illusion?
Now you know ... build your business on rented land is not a good idea.
Would not be better you build your online business and your great ideas in a land where you have full control, without the risk of disappearing from the map of a sudden?
How about stop building sandcastles and begin to rise pyramids so strong that will sustain themselves no matter what happens in the future?
Through a blog and an email list, you have full control over what happens and does not happen in your digital business.
Design, content, reach of users ... You are in charge, and your success depends on only of your knowledge and effort.
Don't get me wrong; social networks are good ways to bring traffic to your site and improve your relationship with your audience. I will speak better about this at the end of the article.
But build your entire business on them is to put everything you have in the hands of the powerful companies from Silicon Valley, which do not show any affection for you and your goals.
Maybe it's time for you to stop building the business of others and create your own, don't think so?
Free yourself from the myth which says that it is possible to maintain a digital business via a rented land in social networks.
Stop wasting precious hours of your day caring of an asset that you do not have full control and direct your focus to make your memorable blog and grow your email list.
Let's take a look at each one in detail.
Much is said today about inbound marketing and content marketing.
Both pillars of the new marketing, where is not the company that hunts the consumer, but the consumer research, compare, educates and finally buy from a company.
The best way for you to facilitate the research, comparison and the education of your future customer is through a blog or website with constant generation of high-quality content.
No matter if you have a local, physical or 100% digital business, you can create content that will help your prospects understand for themselves that your product or service is the best solution.
And I'm not saying this just from experience ...
Several statistics and success case studies confirm that a blog, following strategies of inbound marketing and content marketing, should be the primary business investment today and in the future.
Besides being the best way to generate income for those who want to work on the internet.
Here are some statistics on blogs below:
Therefore, possess a blog helps you directly to:
These are the five main pillars of digital marketing that a blog helps to boost.
And the best of it all: you have full control over the decisions within your blog or website.
You do not want to show advertisements for your readers? It's possible.
Wants to customize your design to encourage e-mail entries? It's possible.
You want to create a unique experience of the user through integrations with several digital marketing tools, focusing on usability and UX? It's possible.
You want to create as many posts and pages and arrange them as you prefer? It's possible.
You want to create a portal or a corporate blog with a team of writers generating actual content to help sell your product or service? It's possible.
And today, create and manage a blog is a few clicks away from you.
You just need to do what they already do on social networks:
Create memorable content to delight your readers, preferably related to what you offer as a service or product.
Here on Blog is my Life, we practice what we teach. "We walk the talk."
Perhaps you've agreed with the importance of having a blog, but you do not know where to start or can not spend money on hosting, email software and a paid WordPress theme.
So you think the solution is to create a blog in Wix, WordPress.com or Blogger.
But I will be honest and direct with you:
You're just putting off the death of your blog.
First, if you cannot invest anything to build a real business, then you are not prepared to be a digital entrepreneur.
Do you know any successful business that has zero cost?
If you already paid for books, courses, schools or colleges to invest in your knowledge and training, you know the importance they had in your career.
Of course, you have the option to continue spending time and energy on social networks or using the free blog platforms mentioned above at zero cost.
However, you will be gradually imprisoned by the highest risk and cost that we can have in our lives.
The cost of ignorance.
The sentence below expresses exactly this point:
"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." - Derek Bok
Several users of Wix were outraged when they noticed an abrupt drop in visits, generating an avalanche of complaints. The reason?
There is a conflict between systems Wix and Google, what difficult the indexing of pages on the search network.
Google has already ruled on the issue, but apparently can not solve 100% of the problem.
Currently, around 60% of the traffic on our blog per month comes directly from Google.
Imagine not receiving thousands of visits every month to your blog because of an indexing problem ...
Undoubtedly, the biggest problem of Blogger for all bloggers is the lack of control in the visual aspects, customization through plugins and technical limitations (servers, page size, HTML, and CSS).
Below, you'll know 10 reasons why a blog on Blogger prevents you from achieving your dream to live on a blog:
1 The Blogger system does not accept big editions, much less external codes.
2 The Blogger code also is not structured per page, as in WordPress (files for each section: single.php, header.php, etc.).
3 Few users understand the XML of a Blogger. Understanding HTML and CSS, however, it is not mandatory, but it is much easier.
4 Because blogs are hosted on Google servers, some users have had their blogs banned from Blogger for various reasons, just as in social networks.
5 Blogger does not work with plugins, which are the main force and advantage of WordPress.
6 Compared with WordPress, Blogger updates are much slower and spaced.
7 Posts edition is much more challenging.
8 You get stuck with very few options for templates. And even adjusting or paying for one, would hardly have the visual power and conversion that a blog on WordPress has.
9 Your blog has only 1 GB of space for photos. To achieve 15 GB, you need to use Gmail or Google Drive.
10 The size of each page is limited to 1MB, being a bad option for blogs about photos, fashion, travel, among others.
Like Blogger, WordPress.com also has its problems.
After all, there is no free lunch. Every platform that you have no control or is free will have its own limitations.
Below are 10 reasons for you don't use WordPress.com:
1 They put ads on your blog.
2 You do not have your domain, being limited to using www.example.wordpress.com. If you want to remove the ".wordpress", you will have to buy it from one source only: The WordPress itself.
3 A limited supply of themes, and you can use only those within the platform.
4 The customization of the layout through a custom HTML or CSS is a paid service.
5 Use for e-commerce is very limited.
6 You can not use plugins, which are the heart of a blog.
7 It is not allowed to place advertisements on affiliate sites.
8 There is no integration with Google Analytics for you to evaluate with accuracy about your visitor's habits and how they navigate through your blog pages.
9 You cannot directly access the FTP.
10 The text "Place your blog with WordPress.com" is required in the footer of your blog, showing everyone that you are using a free and unprofessional network.
Therefore, having a blog on WordPress.org (which is entirely different from WordPress.com), with own domain, own server, and a custom theme is essential for the future of your great ideas.
The greatest danger you can pass is to have ideas that could, without exaggeration, change the way we think and act in today's society, but do not have a way to pass this message because you depend on other people's interests ...
The time is now. Let's stop building fragile sandcastles, quickly overturned by a wave.
The time is now. Let's make memorable blogs, true pyramids that are sustained over millennia, with such strong pillars that are virtually impossible to fall.
The time is now. We will invest in the creation, growth and improvement of communication with our readers and customers through an email list.
And it is about them that we need to talk more in depth in this article.
Email is referred as your identity on the Internet.
More than 50% of the entire population of the planet has an email, and at least 92% of users on the Internet have an email account.
Much is said about social networks replacing the email, but do you remember how normally you log in on them?
Exactly, the good and old email.
The email exists since 1971 when a young engineer named Ray Tomlinson needed a way to send messages between two computers.
This process would be considered by many the beginning of the Internet as we know today, as well as the first email sent.
We cannot say that the email will exist forever, but it is intelligent to think that a tool that survived to time is more likely to continue to be used than a new social network, no matter how brighter it is right now.
The email is a very direct form of communication that you can have with your readers and customers.
Here are the top 3 reasons why you need to create and grow your email list:
1 To promote your new content (and old too)
2 To interact more with your readers
3 To get more revenues by selling your products or affiliate products
Ask any digital entrepreneur if he prefers to have 100,000 registered readers in your email list or 100,000 followers on Instagram or 100,000 "Likes" on Facebook, and they will give you the same answer.
Focus on the email list, especially the ROI (return on investment) that it offers compared to other marketing channels.
1. 92% of users on the Internet has at least one email account.
2. 72% of users check their e-mail inbox 6x or more every day.
3. There are over 3.5 Billion e-mail accounts created. (3x more email accounts than all of the Facebook accounts + Twitter combined!)
4. 44% of people who receive promotional emails made at least one purchase in the past year.
5. For every $1 invested, $44.25 is the average return with the email marketing strategy.
6. Do not send emails with high frequency (69% cite that this is the # 1 reason why unsubscribed their email).
7. Optimize your newsletter to mobile (Today, more than half of users open emails on smartphones).
8. If possible, customize your emails with the name of the person who will receive them. (Increased clicks can be up to 14%)
9. Around 50% of a mailing list will remain active - opening or clicking on emails.
10. In 2012, the email marketing had an ROI (Return on Investment) of 4000%.
And some data from 2015, according to the study of SalesForce:
1. 73% of marketers believe email marketing is the main key to their business.
2. 60% of marketers say that email is critical to their product or service, against 42% in 2014.
3. 43% of companies have teams of 2-3 people who manage email marketing.
4. 74% of marketers believe email marketing will continue to produce an excellent return on investment in the future.
5. 69.7% of internet users have email as the preferred method to communicate with businesses and companies.
The email remains as strong as ever. Also, email marketing tools are increasingly robust, being able to offer complex funnels structures and autoresponders for small and large businesses.
We have identified some villains that can sabotage your great ideas, your business, and even your life.
But what can kill your growth is not only social networks but the dosage of them.
Invest 100% of your time and energy on a single social network is the fastest path to failure.
As well as in finance and investments, if you invest in just one action, "safe" it may seem, you are doomed and locked by their future.
In the above chart, we see the evolution of the Petrobras share price after the discovery of oil wells in the pre-salt.
The stock rocketed to more than $10
Today, after more than seven years, the stock is worth almost $1
A loss of 90% in its value.
Imagine putting all the efforts of a lifetime in a single action, and after seven years, you realize that lost 90% of what you invested.
It's like losing $ 90,000 in a patrimony of $ 100,000.
Although the matter is about finance and investment, simply change the actions of Petrobras for any social network that you decided to invest time and energy.
When you have no control over decisions and are literally at the mercy of the interests of other corporations, it 's hard to see the path to a prosperous future.
Some companies may be linked to scary corruption scandals, as well as social networks can be conniving with various unhealthy practices for the content producer who seeks to professionalize and build their own way.
In 2015, 72.5% of the videos posted on Facebook had been stolen, totalling a loss of 17 billion views for their producers.
Sites and content aggregators took Youtube videos to become viral on Facebook (called Freeboting). The producers of original content don't gain anything from it.
Who wins is Facebook, the one that stole the video, posting on the social network.
To make matters worse, Facebook adjusts their algorithms, so the videos uploaded in their players have more views than videos from Youtube.
Why? Simple. Facebook displays ads on those videos and does much, much money with that. More than 90% of their revenue comes from ads.
And if you ever been amazed at the number of views from videos, think about this:
According to Facebook, a view is counted after 3 seconds of video being displayed, even in "mute." That is, they are just numbers to magnify the ego, the famous metrics of vanity.
Guide to harness the full potential of social media networks in your business, website or blog.
Although the tone of this article is putting the "finger in the wound" of social networks, they are still an excellent addition to your blog and website.
After all, they can also generate:
Social networks are great to generate a strong connection with your audience. After all, they are ... social!
Below you can check the 7 strategies for publishing on social networks.
We love content that resists the passage of time. Content that has no age and always remains actual, even when the world seems to spin faster and faster.
When you own such content, usually of the explanatory type with the goal of rank for a given keyword on Google, publish a call to them on social networks is required.
It is how to generate traffic for free by providing value to readers.
Enumerate your most complete articles and republish them on different days in your social networks.
And don't worry if your stock of publications is over. You can always repeat the publications.
After all, it is practically impossible to your followers to read all of your blog content.
Note: One of our most published articles on social networks is about how to write a perfect article.
Who does not like inspirational phrases?
They are short, transmit good energy and, above all, thought for the day.
Depending on their strength, they can change the course of a bad day.
Here are some examples of inspirational phrases that we published:

Storytelling is very powerful.
When we share stories with a compelling introduction, the power of their virality is enormous.
The publication below that we did to a client, has a high power of viral marketing, attracting many shares.
It begins like this:
"Stephanie was an employee of a large French Telecom company, in search of a fundamental right overlooked by major corporations: Working life quality. "was" because, at the age of 32, she wrote her last words in an email sent to her father, shortly before jumping from the office window: "My boss does not know, of course, but I will be the 23rd employee to commit suicide. I do not accept the new reorganization of the service. I'll switch boss, and instead of going through what I'm going through, I'd rather die. I will leave in the office my purse with my car keys and my mobile phone. I would not want you to receive a message of this kind, but I am completely lost. Wish you well daddy."

Steve Jobs once said in an interview that different technologies walk in cycles and seasons.
They start brilliantly in his spring, reach their peak in the summer, they decline in the autumn, until they die in the winter and are buried in the cemetery of past technologies.
While it is virtually impossible to tell which station each social network is, some patterns begin to appear when we analyze the actual data.
Maybe it's an instinct of those who have deeply studied the large bubbles in the stock market, their euphoria as well as the great depressions and their moments of panic.
